Looking Your Best...Day 1

Objectives:
After completing today's activities, you will be able to:
---describe the characteristics of oily hair.
---describe the characteristics of dry hair.
---describe the characteristics of normal hair.
---list the steps in shampooing hair.
---explain pH and how it applies to shampoos.

Instructions:

1. You should have already taken the Grooming Pretest on
www.mygradebook.com. If you have not done so, go back to www.mygradebook.com and complete it....a grade is not taken.
2. At the end of this activity, you will find scanned copies from the old Teen Living textbook. Read the "Your Hair" section and the Tips section. Get a clean piece of paper and put your name, module, the date,and the activity number at the top. Answer the following questions in complete sentences.
--A. What are the characteristics of oily hair?
--B. What are the characteristics of dry hair?
--C. Describe normal hair.
--D. Why type of hair do you think you have?
--E. What does a conditioner do the hair?

--F. Why should you be gentle when washing hair?
--G. Why is thorough rinsing important for good hair care?
3. As mentioned in the reading, the expensive shampoo is not necessarily the best for your hair. One way to determine which shampoo is best for you, purchase small bottles and see which leaves your hair looking and feeling its best.
4. "pH" (potential hydrogen) is an important consideration when purchasing a shampoo. pH is a chemistry term used to describe the acidity or alkalinity (baseness) of a substance. The amount of hydrogen in a solution is measured on an H scale that has a range from 0 to 14. The amount of hydrogen in a solution determines whether it is more alkaline or more acid. A shampoo that is more acid will have pH rating from 0 to 6.9; a shampoo that is more alkaline will have a pH rating from 7 t0 14. The higher the pH rating (more alkaline), the stronger and harsher the shampoo is on the hair.
5. Go to the module supply cabinet and get the box labeled "Shampoo Chemistry". Take it to
the sink by the washer and dryer. Locate the worksheet for Shampoo Chemistry located in the blue milkcrate. Write the name and price of each of the labeled sample bottles on you
r worksheet. Your are now ready to proceed with the activity.
6. You are going to determine the pH of several shampoos and ammonia. Ask your instructor for the pH meter....be extremely careful with it. Your instructor will show you how to use it.
--A. Put the end of the pH meter in Sample Bottle 1. Read what the pH of that solution is and write it on your worksheet. Is the substance an acid or a base? Write that down.
--B. Rinse the the pH meter gently in lukewarm water.
--C. Put the end of the pH meter in Sample Bottle 2. Read and record that pH. Is the substance an acid or a base? Write that down.
--D. Rinse the pH meter again.
--E. Follow the same procedure for each sample bottle.
--F. When you have completed each of the sample bottles, look at your results. What conclusions can you make? Would ammonia make a good shampoo? Which shampoo was the most acid?
--G. Make sure the pH meter is OFF. Check that every lid on the sample bottles and shampoos are on tightly. Return the pH meter to your instructor and the "Shampoo Chemistry" box to it correct location.
7. If you use a shampoo other than one of those tested, ask for a sample bottle. Then, for five extra credit points on this module, bring in a sample of your shampoo so that you can te
st it to see if it is acid or alkaline.
8. Clean up your module area and make sure everything is returned to its proper location.
